But you’re right to look at what you can control rather than blame them for the vagueness.
Did you talk to them over the phone before you started?
From my days in consulting it always paid off to play back what you think they have asked for to them.
Quite often then would say “no no that’s not what I meant” and you can correct the brief before starting the work.
